Vouch vs hiring an in-house recruiter

Updated

An in-house recruiter is a salary you pay every month whether or not you hire, and it pays off once you are hiring many people a year. For a startup making its first few key hires, paying per hire usually costs less: Vouch's fee on a $180,000 hire is $18,000, against a median of $75,940 a year for HR specialists, the BLS group that includes recruiters, before benefits and tools.[3][1]

What an in-house recruiter costs

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts recruiters among human resources specialists, whose median pay was $75,940 a year in May 2025. That median covers every kind of HR specialist, not only technical recruiters; recruiters who report pay to Levels.fyi show a median total compensation of about $152,000 in the US. On top of pay you add benefits, equity and the sourcing tools they need.[1][2]

A new recruiter also needs time to learn your bar, and until then a founder still screens most candidates.

What Vouch costs

Vouch charges 10% of the hire's first-year base salary, invoiced when the offer is signed. Nothing is due for a search that does not end in a hire. On a $180,000 base salary, the fee is $18,000.[3]

How to decide

  • Hiring a few key people this year: pay per hire, so cost follows results.
  • Hiring a steady stream of similar roles: an in-house recruiter starts to pay for itself.
  • Hiring for a role where the bar is hard to write down, such as a founding engineer: pick whoever will interview candidates against your must-haves before you spend an hour on them.

One way to do both: a firm like Vouch for the first key hires, then an in-house recruiter once the hiring plan is large enough to keep one busy.

Questions founders ask

Does Vouch replace a recruiter on my team?

For the first few key hires, it can. Vouch runs the search and the first interviews, and you meet only the people worth meeting.
